Thoughts and History

Art is the spice of life and without it, life would be so very dull...
My goal is to share the cultural elements of my artwork. After owning a gallery (Black Art Renaissance) for ten years and promoting the work of others, I now find a strong desire to create my own artwork. "Golden Girl" was created many years ago, my work has changed... I now lean towards simplistic imagry and graphic designs, but still at times find my way to capturing real life.
In Minneapolis, I directed a wonderful public art project in the late 90's with Master Muralist John Biggers, where we created a mural 20' high by 200 feet wide, titled: Celebration of Life, a collaboration with local and youth artists. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in 2001.
One of the greatest highlights of my Gallery was when Dr. Maya Angelou
agreed to do a book signing during the weekend of the Mural unveiling. There were three Dr.'s in the house that day, the late Dr. John Biggers,
Dr. Maya Angelou and Dr. Alvia Wardlaw, head of the Art Department at Texas Southern.
Since then, a big accomplishment was curating a large exhibition of 54 african american artists entitled " Soul on Ice" done in the cold month of February in 2008, at the Soap Factory, a warehouse gallery with no heat! It was actually a big success and a stone cold groove!!
While in Minneapolis, I was artist development coordinator for a non-profit, Obsidian Arts, whose mission is to promote Black Visual Culture. I was in charge of Artists relations for a support group called TAWU(the art within us), the focus is, education, promotion through exhibition and festivals. The group exists to help further the careers of emerging artists.
Now in 2010, I'm moving to Phoenix, AZ and not sure what the artistic future holds but I will be out there... Stay tuned for updated artwork, current events and news.
